YouTube Content ID and Claims Management: A Guide for Music Distributors

Yeasin Arafat

Once a distributor has artists, YouTube becomes a steady source of support work. Artists find their songs used in other videos and ask for a claim; others need to link their profile or whitelist their own channel so their uploads are not claimed by mistake. These requests arrive constantly, and without a system they scatter across chats and email.

The common request types

  • YouTube claim: the artist asks you to claim a specific video that uses their song.
  • Content ID: the artist asks for a recording to be added to Content ID protection.
  • Whitelist: the artist's own channel is exempted so their videos are not claimed.
  • Profile linking: connecting the artist's profile on a platform to their releases.

What each request needs

Most claim requests are only actionable if they include the song title, the ISRC or UPC, the label, and the video link. Collecting those fields in a structured form at submission time saves the back-and-forth later.

Handling the queue

  • One queue per request type, with a clear Pending, Approved, or Rejected status.
  • The artist, song, ISRC, UPC, and video URL visible in a single table row.
  • A required reason on rejection, so the artist knows what to correct.
  • The artist sees the same status you set, so they do not need to ask.

Why it belongs in the dashboard

Claims are a support load that grows with your catalog. Putting submission and review inside the same platform as releases and payouts means every request is tied to a real release and a real artist, and nothing is lost in a message thread.
